The Workshop
There is always a lot going on in the workshop. Sometimes it is quiet when I am welding or using the Lathe. Sometimes it is very LOUD indeed when I am using the Planisher or Plasma Cutter.
Starting sculpture
It all starts with a idea, usually from an amazing plant or animal I've seen.

Could I make that?
Do I have the tools?
How could I fold or bend the metal to that shape?
I may sketch what I want to make, the shape or particular pose of the animal. I then create this as a CAD drawing if needed.
To the workshop
I cut the steel from flat sheets with the Plasma Cutter and Grinder. Then the shaping begins. I use the Press to bend and fold the pieces to shape. The Fly-Press and Planisher is used to create convex forms.
The pieces are forced together into 3D shapes, a leg or a head, tacked together and fully welded along each seam. The pieces are then joined into the final shape. The body joins the legs and the head to the neck. Then comes the details, - eyes, teeth, hair or feathers.
I get a real sense of accomplishment when it is finally standing there finished - tricking the onlooker into thinking that that pile of metal has life contained within!
